Happy New Year!! The fishing is fantastic with these cold temperatures although we have cancelled a few recent trips for a later(warmer) date due to unsafe and slippery conditions. Got out this morning with buddy, Eric Michener, for some prefishing for an upcoming 3-Day multi-Gulf Coast location speckled trout adventure with a client from Sarasota. Greeted at the boatramp with frozen surface water in the bayou. It was very interested breaking the ice with the bow of my 21 Hewes Redfisher. Reminded me of the Deadliest Catch as they offload at St. Paul Island(but not as dangerous.) Although the banging on the prop and hull made me a little nervous. Found some very nice speckled trout including a few pushing four pounds. Basically, one after another in a small area. All fish released and mission accomplished locally. Next is Mobile and Panama City next week. Please click an image to...

Guided Mr. Brad Barber this morning. Brad wanted to learn about shallow water redfishing in our local upper bay areas. Started out at first light and cruised to the first area. Immediately saw wakes everywhere. Push poled at first and then switched to the trolly to bump up fish. Found large groups of lower, mid and upper level redfish but found it very difficult to entice the larger fish to bite as they were very unactive and basically laying on the muddy bottom in extremely dirty water. Stuck a few decent fish and then proceeded to absolutely hammer 20-25 lower slot redfish. Only a very slow tap-tap retrieve would produce fish and the big fish wouldn’t even take a dead-stick stinky Gulp! Not really used to that frustration! Anyway, much was caught and much was learned. Hopefully Brad will return to produce lots of fish for himself and his family in the future. All fish taken on 3″ and 4″ Gulp! Shrimp in whatever color you’d like. All fish...

Guided Mr. Jim Tully and Mr. Dustin Martinson this morning in the upper bays. Both are avid anglers and were lots of fun to fish with. We were met with cold temperatures, a stiff wind and some very sneaky redfish. With the water falling rapidly, we started by targeting some shallow flats with decently clear water. After struggling for the first hour or so, we finally stuck our first fish, a 27″ 6.5# redfish. Continued on the same path for a while and then hit some shallow, muddy areas where we found them pretty thick. Lots of mid-size to smaller fish but plenty of them! Dustin has a few epic strikes after seeing fish leave the bank and made awesome casts to the waking redfish. Very cool hookups! Concentrated on replicating the same areas and it really paid off. Stuck with three techniques today. Jerkys, spoons and popping corks. All together over 20 redfish, 1 nice trout and a turtle. Please click on image to...
