We’ve had a very stiff wind out of the southeast the last few days but the redfish and speckled trout don’t mind at all. During some periods, the winds approached 30-plus mph so boat positioning was definitely in focus and casting with the wind was a must. With the slow water conditions, some wind actually helps triggers a better bite during the neap tides and slow water so the more wind, the better. Fishing the Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads and Johnson 1/4oz Johnson Gold Spoons slowly also helps, along with being around some large numbers of both species. In addition, light 6# Ultracast InvisiBraid and 1/4oz jigheads made bite recognition much easier. It was VERY windy. Yesterday and today, I guided some local Pensacola anglers in search of instructional, techniques and locations for Spring-time redfish and speckled trout. Both trips, we focused on wind-blown banks and covered banks to find great numbers. As long as we found nice concentrations of bait and mullet, we had no problem sticking great fish. Found redfish in the 22-29″ range and some speckled trout up to 22″. There’s really been some quality speckled trout around this early Spring as we’d expect. We also hooked some flounder but they never made it in the boat. Average catches for the last few days totaled 8-15 redfish and 15-30 speckled trout from 14-22″. Each day a limit of redfish and a few 16-18″ trout were taken for dinner. We encourage the larger trout to be release along with the larger 25-27″ redfish. Taking a few days off to get the new 2300 Pathfinder HPS tighten up and loaded. Thanks, E Holstman Please click an image to...

Guided Joe Gallagher and his son, Ryan, this morning. The guys wanted to catch big redfish so we made a short run to some flats that have been holding these fish. Low-light conditions made it challenging for us to see them but we were able to spot several in very shallow water and get baits in front of a few. We also discovered that many were just milling the deeper drops along the edges as the sun wasn’t cooperating. The Berkley Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads in camo did the trick and the guys wore out their arms on some huge fish. Please click an image to...
Read MoreAn instructive and productive afternoon at Redfish University-March 29, 2011
Guided Mr. Frank Brueske and his son-in-law, Chris, this afternoon for some fishing in the northern reaches of the Pensacola Bay system. Frank spends most of his time in Escambia Bay so I really wanted to broaden his angling knowledge and locations. Started at 1:30pm with a soft easterly breeze and incoming water. Didn’t take long for Frank and Chris to stick some quality speckled trout on Gulp! baits and hardbaits. Travelled a bit further south and fished some very productive banks for redfish and found some cooperate fish including Frank’s 24″ fatty that crushed his Gulp! 5″ Jerkshad in camo. Fished several more areas and had success pretty much everywhere. Hopefully Frank and Chris have found some very productive areas for redfish and trout and will have much success in the future. Probably a cancelled trip tomorrow because of the weather but trips the rest of this week and next so I’ll have some more awesome Redfish University reports. April is almost filled but still have openings in May so book now to experience the wonder of Redfish University. E...
Read MoreOver 300lbs of redfish at Redfish University-November 9, 2010
We were looking for some visual stimulation this morning for Day 2. Today, the Enabnits and I travelled to Destin, FL. for some shallow water sight fishing for bull redfish. The fellas appreciated the fact that Redfish University doesn’t troll nor throw at birds for these redfish adventures. Like yesterday, we found redfish in very shallow water. Unlike yesterday, these redfish were all over 30″ and 100% of our hookups were a result of sight fishing. Found the fish to be a mixture of challenging and pretty cooperative with a well-placed presentation. It took the fellas a little while to get the hang of it but before long, they were sticking fish regularly. Today we used 4″ Gulp! Shrimp in New Penny and Molting with an 1/8oz. Marsh Works Bull Red jighead. A lighter head helped present the bait more naturally. Several doubles today and strikes from trailing fish which was fun to watch. All fish released happy and healthy. Travelling to Orange Beach tomorrow morning for a redfish, trout and flounder festival. Book now to experience the thrill of Redfish University. Guided another IFA Redfish tournament team this morning for Day 1 of 2 in search of redfish. Teams and locations are kept confidential with huge increases in Redfish U. website traffic during local tournament weeks. Fair is fair… Apparently, we were in-line with every thunderstorm with 30 mph winds all day. We had a few short breaks but with the neap tide in the mix, it really made conditions difficult. I will have to say, under the circumstances, we did quite well today. Found some quality fish in a few locations and left them biting. Also found plenty of nice trout and flounder in most areas. The fellas and I will be back on the water in the morning for Day 2 to check a few more productive areas. All fish released. Book now to experience Redfish University!
