Tricky redfish and trout at Redfish University-June 6, 2010

The calls/emails keep coming, so Redfish University will continue to guide on the Gulf Coast. Our inshore waterways remain clear of oil. Guided Mr. Preston Thomas this morning. Preston is an experienced angler and wanted to go checkout some redfish and trout action in Pensacola Bay. Started out at 515am with some topwater action. Found the fish to be pretty sluggish today(maybe as a result of all the rain yesterday), but we did catch a handful of speckled trout until the bite came to a halt. Travelled to some other productive areas and found the redfish/trout more cooperative on the Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads. Most of the redfish were on the small side but we did find one larger 4.5# trout. Continued a little milkrun and found a few fish in each area. Today was pretty difficult but I think we did as well as we possibly could. Slow bite, lots of freshwater. Preston returned home with some redfish and trout to prepare on that new professional oven of his. Please click an image to enlarge and view...

Great trout, slow redfish and rain at Redfish University-May 31, 2010

Guided Mr. Jim Greeson and friend, Richard, this morning. With rain all around, we dodged rain showers and lightning most of the morning. Started at 515am with some topwater action for the normally pretty consistent speckled trout and redfish. Only had a few blowups in the first ten minutes so we switched to Gulp! Jerkshads pretty quickly. We immediately started catching small to medium-sized trout and no redfish. Ran to another area to find the same small trout bite with one 5# fish being the exception. Went to a recently very productive redfish bank and only picked up one decent fish but also scored a few large trout in the 4.5-5# range. Ended the day catching a few decent redfish on a marshy bank but really never hammered the redfish like in recent days. Plenty of speckled trout but the redfish were tough. All fish released. Big Trout and Redfish at Redfish University-May 25, 2010

Guided Mr. Barry Cowart and his son, Barry Jr. this morning. Today’s focus was early morning topwater action and introducing Barry Jr. to inshore fishing and our local redfish and speckled trout. Hit the water at 515am and watched fish explode on the baits all morning. Young Barry quickly gained confidence with a light-tackle spinning outfit and began walking the topwater like a pro. Stuck some nice trout in the 3-4.5# range and also hit some nice redfish in the same areas. Fished until around 1000am when the wind picked up and the water movement stopped. All fish taken on Skitterwalks and Berkley Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads. Barry and Barry took some fish home for dinner. I hope the guys learned alot today and can use this experience to catch many fish together in the future! Please click an image to enlarge and view...

22 Pompano, redfish and trout at Redfish University-May 18, 2010

Guided Jim Tully and Dustin Martinson for some redfish, trout and pompano fishing. Started out early with some topwater in shallow water and scored some decent trout and some medium redfish. Fished a few more areas but the bite was pretty slow so we took off to the beach to find some pompano. The pompano were very cooperative and we found them on washouts and deeper drops in the surf-line. Very hot action from 930am-1200 on the rising tide. We had some nice strikes near the boat as well as fish followed the bait on a quick retrieve and we were able to drop the bait to the fish. Pretty cool opportunities! Ended up with 22 pompano in a few hour period with lots of annoying ladyfish mixed in. Today, the fish were caught on Skitterwalks and Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads in the morning and all pompano were taken on orange pompano jigs. 15 Pompano were kept by Jim, Dustin and myself. Thanks for the pompano fellas and see ya soon! Mid-day short trip at Redfish University-May 7, 2010

Guided Jim Davis today for a short trip to sight fish some shallow water redfish. Found plenty of fish. Some were very cooperative and some ran from the baits. I guess that’s what makes this type of fishing so challenging and frustrating at times. With both of us fishing, we picked off a hand off of pretty decent redfish on broken bottom. These fish were relating to small patches of grass and small minnows so a well-place Johnson 1/4oz. Gold Spoon was again the bait of choice. We probably hooked 1 0f 10 that we saw but also fan-casted some areas that we know hold lots of fish. Not a bad ratio, but the larger fish were definitely more difficult that the 4-5# fish. All-in-all, a successful day of seeing fish and catching a few. All fish...
