Got out this morning for a quick topwater redfish and trout trip. Hit some great areas and picked up several nice 2.5-3# trout and some quality redfish including a 26″ fish. Found most the redfish and trout on sandy bottom around bait. Lots of action and lots of fun. Pretty decent string on trips scheduled in the next few days. Hope the weather cooperates and the oil stays away. All fish released this morning. Please click an image to enlarge and view...
Read MoreYamaha VMax 250 SHO performance update-June 2, 2010
Hello everyone. The new Yamaha Vmax 250 SHO was mounted on my 2009 Hewes 21 Redfisher about a month ago. The engine currently has 21 hours on it and I wanted to provide a short report of my experience and the performance of the Yamaha 250 SHO. This engine has surpassed all expectations! 71 mph, incredible out of the hole, outstanding mid-range power and acceleration, quiet, reliable and 80# lighter than the F225! The SHO is the perfect engine. Although I will rarely hit 71mph, it is nice to know that I can out-run storms, reel-in most boats in tournament settings and provide my clients with better range and more fishing time. Not to mention, the SHO cruises at 48-55mph under very little strain and sips fuel at 3.2-4.0 mpg. The Yamaha SHO is beautifully matched with the Yamaha Vmax Series 25TI 15 1/8 prop. For everyone interested in testing the Yamaha SHO, please visit Peter and Pete, Jr. at The Ship’s Chandler in Destin, FL. If I am in the area, I will be very happy to give you a test ride on my boat. Thanks again and here are a few photos. Please click an image to enlarge and view...
Read MoreGreat trout, slow redfish and rain at Redfish University-May 31, 2010
Guided Mr. Jim Greeson and friend, Richard, this morning. With rain all around, we dodged rain showers and lightning most of the morning. Started at 515am with some topwater action for the normally pretty consistent speckled trout and redfish. Only had a few blowups in the first ten minutes so we switched to Gulp! Jerkshads pretty quickly. We immediately started catching small to medium-sized trout and no redfish. Ran to another area to find the same small trout bite with one 5# fish being the exception. Went to a recently very productive redfish bank and only picked up one decent fish but also scored a few large trout in the 4.5-5# range. Ended the day catching a few decent redfish on a marshy bank but really never hammered the redfish like in recent days. Plenty of speckled trout but the redfish were tough. All fish released. Read MoreSplendid day of redfish and trout at Redfish University-May 27, 2010
Guided Mr. and Mrs. Griffith this morning for some redfish and trout action. Phil commented early on the beautiful full moon setting and wondered if the bite was going to be difficult. My focus was to put them around as many fish as possible(a great full moon plan) and their job was to catch them. Both anglers were very impressive and caught multiple fish using a few proven techniques. Started out at first light and approached some great topwater banks to find them being pounded by 1-2′ chop. We tried the topwaters for a few minutes but I think the fish were pretty freaked out in the washing machine. Switched to Berkley Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads and began hammering fish. Plenty 0f 3-4# trout and Phil stuck the most perfect 27″ redfish I have seen in a while. Right at 27″ and 7.5#. He was thrilled! Changed locations to a more protected bank and found redfish and trout slicks everywhere. Stuck some more 3# trout and a few 4-5# redfish. Ended up making a very productive little milkrun and found fish nearly everywhere. Fished a bank I hadn’t visited in some time and absolutely smashed the redfish on a shallow sandy bottom. Lots of fun today and lots of action. All fish caught on Gulp! Jerkshads in camo and rootbeer rigged on Marsh Works jigheads. The Griffith took 3 Redfish and 8 big trout for a future cookout. Read MoreLots of redfish and trout at Redfish U.-May 13, 2010
Guided Mr. John Prudhomme and Mr. Richard Cobb this morning. Richard is strictly a livebait inshore angler but after today, we hope he’s a true believer in artificial baits for redfish and trout. Started out at 515am with some topwater speckled trout action. Found some medium-sized fish but it was much slower than earlier in the week and had some larger fish come unbuttoned. At 730am we took off for some clear water to sight fish redfish. Found some great concentrations on medium to upper slot fish in shallow water and even had some double hookups in some areas. The guys were able to see the fish and make great casts to entice some epic strikes. We also got some large speckled trout in the same areas. Early morning, the fish were taken on Skitterwalks and in the shallows, the redfish loved the Johnson 1/4oz. Gold Spoons. Great morning of fishing with 10-12 nice trout and 12-15 redfish and all fish released. Please click on an image to enlarge and view...
