Steady Day at the University-Sept.7, 2009

Steady trips at Redfish University this week although there small concentrations of redfish in very few areas. Good news is, I expect the redfishing to improve dramatically in the coming weeks and especially next month. Guided Mr. Barry James and his wife Cheryl this morning. Barry is an avid local kayak angler and I was able to cover lots of water with him and introduce him to some excellent kayak fishing areas and some clever tricks with artificial baits. Started out with some quality trout and lower slot redfish as we waited for the water to drop in the upper bay areas. At 730am, we blasted to some very productive area and a found the fish to be very difficult(local Labor Day traffic?) Whatever the cause, we managed to product an decent range of quality redfish. Ended the day trying to scrape up a few flounder which proved to be predictably grim on slow water movement. All in all, a below average day according to Redfish University standards but hopefully much knowledge was gained and a fantastic redfish dinner was had. Thanks again for the wonderful bottles of wine, James and Cheryl!! Please click on photos to...

Solid day of Slams and Rain-July 13, 2009

Guided Mr. Rick Maddox and his son, Josh,  from Baytown, TX. this morning in Blackwater and Escambia Bays. Rick and Josh are accomplished bass anglers back in Texas and frequent Sam Rayburn and some areas south of the border. They wanted to stick with the bass fishing theme so I put them on several inshore slams, covering a wide array of techniques and areas. First, we focused on several large schools of trout with a few redfish mixed in. Ran to Blackwater to get some redfish in the shallow water and finished the day with some quality flounder including one 6.5#, 26 1/2 inch monster. All fish caught on Johnson 1/4 Gold Spoons and Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads in camo. I kept 5 flounder for stuffing(Tracy loves stuffed flounder.) Unfortunately, we got drenched on the way back to the ramp but remained comfortable in our Patagonia and Yamaha rain gear although our pants were soaked. Sea trial and a few redfish-June 19, 2009

Sea trialed my 2008 Redfisher on Friday morning in Destin. After showing the potential buyer the boat’s unparalleled capabilities, we stuck 3-4 decent redfish with the youngest of our fishing team fighting them to the boat. We had a great time and it was very hot. Can’t wait for my 2009 21 Redfisher to be rigged and ready. It’s the absolute best of the...

Covering lots of water at Redfish University-June 16, 2009

Guided Terry and Victor from Destin this morning over in their home waters. Started out in Hogtown Bayou and stuck 3-4 redfish but the water was still a little off and the mullet were not as plentiful as in recent trips. Blasted through the landcut and arrived in West Bay as the water was beginning to fall. Found lots of redfish inside and just on the edge of the grass. A few hours into the falling tide, the tailing began. All together we saw 100-150 fish in schools of 2-20. We picked off 7-8 very good quality redfish but all-in-all, the fish were very shy today. Great casts and quiet presentations by Terry, Victor and myself were mostly ignored. It really makes me want to go over there tomorrow at stick the crap out of them!! Anyway, hopefully the fellas learned a ton about shallow water angling and how frustrating redfish can be at times. All fish caught on Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads and 1/4oz. Johnson Gold Spoons. All fish released. Click a photo to view larger...
