Day 3-Redfish, pompano and jacks at Redfish University-April 9, 2011

For Day 3 with Chris and Will Tiller, we wanted to target some topwater redfish and trout again in the early morning and then hit some flats for larger redfish and then try for some more pompano. Fished some areas in Pensacola Bay where there were lots of medium sized redfish and some very nice speckled trout. We could only get one redfish to bite and saw more fish than I’ve ever seen in some areas that simply would not bite. We threw topwaters, Gulp!, everything at them but it just wouldn’t happen. Low, slow water and the combination of still pretty cool water may have made things difficult but its only a matter of time before these fish start to cooperate everyday for us. Travelled west and found some more big redfish in the 28-40″ on some shallow flats and got a couple. Some redfish were pretty difficult today as well. Found a huge school of jacks and pulled on them for a while. Ran to the beach and tried for pompano. Ended up with a few nice fish but not as active as yesterday. Trip tomorrow and I’ll report back then. E Holstman Please click an image to...

Day 1-Lots of redfish of all sizes at Redfish University-April 7, 2011

Guided Mr. Chris Tiller and his son, Will, for the first of a three day redfish and speckled trout adventure. Both anglers are accomplished bass fisherman and were an absolute pleasure to fish with. Started at first light over in East Bay and Blackwater with a rising tide. Quickly found some decent redfish holding on some shallow flats and around some shallow structure. Hit some really productive flats for the first few hours and found some nice groups of redfish from 25-29″ that were more than willing to cooperate with a few double hookups. Travelled further south into East Bay and fished some structure in 6-10′ of water in high winds and knocked off some quality redfish in the 26-31″ range. We found the Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads in camo to be most productive. Taking the fellas into Santa Rosa Sound tomorrow morning, followed by some sight fishing for over-sized fish and some possibly some pompano. Stay tuned! Day 2- Early morning topwater then sight fishing at Redfish University-March 6, 2011

Guided Mr. Paul Murphy for Day 2 of our redfish adventure at Redfish University. Started at first light and threw topwater baits in very shallow water where there were plenty of mullet and bait. It wasn’t long before we drew explosions from hungry redfish and a few very nice speckled trout. A few redfish actually porpoised completely out of the water to pounce our topwaters. Made for a very exciting morning of fishing! More blowups than hookups but that’s topwater fishing for legal redfish. Around 830am, we took off for some 3-5′ deep, very clear flats where there have been plenty of legal and over-sized redfish. Found a school of 30-40 fish and began hooking fish. Sight fishing and blindcasting were as equally as successful with Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads in camo. Even got a few Spanish mackeral in the mix. All fish released and at it again tomorrow morning with a 3 Day booking for redfish and speckled trout. More reports to follow. E Holstman Please click an image to...

Day 1- Challenging but they couldn’t hide for long at Redfish University-April 5, 2011

Guided Mr. Paul Murphy for Day 1 of a two day booking. After last night’s downpours, high winds, erratic pressure, a 30 degree temperature change and today’s blue-bird skies with heavy winds, I figured today was going to be a bit challenging. Fished the northern reaches of the Pensacola Bay system before all the dirty, fresh water entered the bay. Started out at 630am with 20-25 mph winds and very cool conditions. Hit some areas normally full of fish and stuck a few decent trout and small redfish. Made a quick milk-run with similar results. Changed the plan and hit some areas with deeper pockets and dropoffs and eventually found plenty of redfish, even some double hookups in the mix. Right on the bottom and a very slow tapping retrieve was the key. That and some worm rattles which work wonders in stained or dirty water. Found lots of redfish in the 18-25″ range with some nice trout mixed in. A very challenging morning but we figured it out pretty quickly. All fish released and looking forward to a new location in the morning. Trips all week so the reports will keep coming. E Holstman Please click an image to...

Cloudy day sight fishing at Redfish University-March, 31 2011

Guided Joe Gallagher and his son, Ryan, this morning. The guys wanted to catch big redfish so we made a short run to some flats that have been holding these fish. Low-light conditions made it challenging for us to see them but we were able to spot several in very shallow water and get baits in front of a few. We also discovered that many were just milling the deeper drops along the edges as the sun wasn’t cooperating. The Berkley Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads in camo did the trick and the guys wore out their arms on some huge fish. Please click an image to...
