Big trout, some redfish and a bonus at Redfish University-April 22, 2011

Guided Jared and his son this morning for some big trout and redfish action. Started at first light and threw some topwaters to produce some nice trout in the 2-4.5# range. Also caught some fish on the Sebile Stick Shadd and Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads. Found lots of bait and mullet milling and there was plenty of fish with them. Primarily targeted speckled trout but had a few nice redfish mixed in. For a bonus, we hooked a big 40# drum in shallow water. A very big fish!! All fish released and hitting it again tomorrow morning. Book now for an epic trip at Redfish University. Please click an image to...

And again, high production at Redfish University-April 20, 2011

For Day 2 with T and Rich, they had requested a little sight fishing for large redfish like we did last Spring. Blasted off at 900am with cloud-cover but very little wind. I can work with low-light conditions but the wind has made the fish very difficult to see in time. Hit two or three areas where I always find these large redfish but only found a few sharks cruising the flats. We ended up targeting a clear flat that had a gradual dropoff and just had to trust that the fish were there. Trust comes with experience and the redfish were there indeed! Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads in camo with Marsh Works 1/4oz. Bull Red Jigheads did the trick. Lots of fish between 18-28# to tire the fellas out before leaving back to Connecticut.  Back to the bread and butter tomorrow with the legal redfish and big trout. Book now to experience an epic adventure and learn more about inshore than you can ever imagine at Redfish University. E Holstman\ Please click an image to...

Success again with redfish and trout at Redfish University-April 19, 2011

It’s been a bit more challenging lately at Redfish University but we seem to always figure it out and produce great catches of the shallow inshore species. Full moon and high winds can make things tricky but consistently being around large numbers of fish is the key. Guided regulars, Terrance and Rich, this morning for some redfish and speckled trout. Started at first-light with topwaters only to draw a few fish but lots of misses and blowups. Since Pure Fishing acquired Sebile Lures, I have been extremely impressed by these baits. Switched to the Sebile Stick Shadds and absolutely hammered the big trout all morning. Wind blocked banks aren’t always the ticket in windy conditions as we found most of our quality fish on banks being pounded by small swells. After getting lots and lots of trout in the 2-5# range we concentrated on the redfish. Found lots of mullet and minnows and the fish were there. Ended up with some in the 25-30″ range that were taken on Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads. All fish released and back with T...

Redfish of all sizes and speckled trout at Redfish University-April 18, 2011

Full week of trips. Guided Jon Merchant and his son Zak today for some redfish and trout. The guys wanted to catch some to take back to Destin for a fresh fish dinner at Harbor Docks. Started at 600am and ran to a shallow flat where we immediately got on some great redfish and solid trout. Topwaters and Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads were both popular baits and we targeted schools of mullet and baitfish near the surface.  Made an even further run east and found huge amounts of speckled trout that crushed topwaters and Gulp! Jerkshads again. Every cast produced a 14-19″ speckled trout. A bit further down the bank, we found a nice school of 24-27″ redfish that pounded some topwaters and Jon actually picked off a great redfish off of Zac’s topwater hooked fish. A few double hookups and more quality fish to follow. Then it was off to the west where we found the bull redfish laying around in 4-6′ of water on some clear flats. Stuck some of those and then headed down the beach for...

High winds, neap tide but pretty good day at Redfish University-April 15, 2011

Guided siblings Judy and Art today for some redfish and speckled trout action in Pensacola Bay. I was forced to fish some areas a little early in the year where I know there are plenty of fish but it definitely took some creativity to draw the strikes on a day like today. Lots of wind and a neap tide narrowed our areas this morning but we really landed on some great concentrations of both species. Started at 600am and ran to some shallow sand flats and immediately found some very nice trout in the 2-4# to start the morning. Travelled to a less protected bank with two foot rollers and caught some more quality trout. Back to the protected banks to look for redfish and we found plenty but they proved to be pretty difficult with only me landing a few in the 22-25″ range with well-placed Gulp! 3″ Shrimp. Thinking the fish would respond better around some protected and structure, we hit an area with both and got into some very nice 26-31″ redfish that were very happy to take Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads. Around 10am, conditions...
