Guided Mr. Jim Lawrence and his son, Jamie, on Tuesday and guided Chris and Missy Simmons this morning. Jim and Jamie really stuck it to the redfish and trout, taking some great fish home for dinner in Destin. Today, Chris and Missy joined me for a very similar trip where both anglers got their share of quality redfish and trout. Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads in camo always do the trick and fish were found on both protective and wind-blown banks. With the water quickly rising, I find it most productive to skirt the banks very closely, casting outward to redfish approaching the grass and root-filled bottom. Blindcasting and sight fishing were both successful techniques. The couple took a few quality trout and some mid-sized redfish home for dinner. Lots of trips booked so plan accordingly anglers!! E...

My last trip before heading to Ambergris Caye, Belize for ten days. I am ready! Had a couple fellas who wanted to pull on some fish this morning for a few hours. Started at 700am and filled the livewell with beautiful 4″ menhaden and 4-6″ mullet. For those interested in finding some quality live bait, the ponds on the south side of the bay along Ft. Pickens Rd. are packed with great numbers of both mullet and menhaden. Hit some bottom structure for about 45 minutes without a bite. Slow water? Incoming tide? I don’t know. Packed those rods up and pulled out the light tackle. Ran out of the Pass to the west side and found plenty of bait and birds. No visible signs of large redfish but we found soon enough that they were on the down-current side of the bait and near the bottom. A few other boats were up-current and didn’t see them with fish. Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads with 1/4oz. Marsh Works Bull Red jigheads and 3/4oz. Johnson Spoons worked great. I wouldn’t say there was a lot of redfish in the area and I don’t have a bottomfinder on the 21 Redfisher but they were definitely down-current waiting for the bait to come to them. Pulled on fish for a few hours and headed in at 1000am to pack for Belize. The bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, rum and cold Belikens are waiting for me. Look for some more RU reports after November 29. E Holstman Please click an image to enlarge and view...

Guided Brian and Brett Enabnit of Atlanta this morning for Day 1 of a 4 day adventure along the NW Florida Gulf Coast. Today we decided to target redfish of all sizes. Started early and ran to Pensacola Pass and the beaches to look for large redfish. Found some birds and bait but nothing around them. Looked around for an hour and decided to make a long run back to the upper Pensacola Bay system to find the legal redfish in shallow water. It didn’t take long before we found our targets in big numbers. Low, clear water made things pretty easy for us see them and they cooperated well. Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads and 1/4oz. Johnson Gold Spoons took all the fish including a nice striped bass. The guys kept some for the grill and we’ll be travelling east to Destin tomorrow morning for Day 2. Guided another IFA Redfish tournament team this morning for Day 1 of 2 in search of redfish. Teams and locations are kept confidential with huge increases in Redfish U. website traffic during local tournament weeks. Fair is fair… Apparently, we were in-line with every thunderstorm with 30 mph winds all day. We had a few short breaks but with the neap tide in the mix, it really made conditions difficult. I will have to say, under the circumstances, we did quite well today. Found some quality fish in a few locations and left them biting. Also found plenty of nice trout and flounder in most areas. The fellas and I will be back on the water in the morning for Day 2 to check a few more productive areas. All fish released. Book now to experience Redfish University! Read MoreHigh pressure, very low production at Redfish University-October 29, 2010
Well, it was one of those days that we should have stayed in bed. Guided long-time client and Redfish U. VIP, Bob Willice, this morning in the upper bays for some redfish and trout fishing as well as some location and technique instruction. Bob, living on Santa Rosa Sound, has fished down there with me several times but has never entered East Bay or the Blackwater area. Our results from today may make certain Bob never returns to those areas!!! With the fish predictably biting so well pre-cold front, today’s high pressure, high winds and blue skies, were not exactly a great recipe for success. Nevertheless, we should still catch fish right? You would think… Started at 630am and covered some great speckled trout spots only to find catfish. Travelled further south to some fabulous redfish areas and threw the whole tackle box at them. The day after a cold front passes, it’s very important to scale down your baits, slow your retrieve to a crawl and get around as many fish as possible. We accomplished all three but both of us could not draw a bite. At 900am, I looked at Bob and said let’s go next Friday and we’ll act like today never happened. Bob agreed and we were off. Often times, negatives are accompanied by even greater positives. Because the fishing was so slow, Bob witnessed my panic mode and was able to see a huge amount of areas where there WILL be many fish in the coming weeks. We will return next Friday to find all these fish biting and in the locations they should be in. See ya Friday, Bob! Book now to experience the wonder of Redfish...
