Easy day of sightfishing at Redfish University-March 16, 2011

100% sightfishing today and that’s the way I like it. Had a couple guys today with the request “we’d like to see fish and catch fish.” They came to right place, that’s Redfish University’s speciality. Hit the beach and stuck a few nice pompano and then fished some shallow flats for legal and over-sized redfish. Hammered the redfish in the 6-30# range with easily 20 fish in the boat in a few hours. With some tired anglers, I travelled way east into the Sound and found them some more legal and over-sized redfish on the shallow grass flats. Always easy to find fish but they were rabid this morning for us. Easy, easy day. Back again tomorrow. Better book now, filling up quickly. E Holstman Please click an image to...

Lots of legal and bull redfish at Redfish University-March 14, 2010

Guided Mr. Bill Cleek and family today. Bill and the fam are regular Spring break visitors from Houston and wanted to use their beautiful 22 Pathfinder to get familiar with the Pensacola area fishing. Met the crew at Shoreline Park at 830am and ran east in search of some redfish and trout action. Found minimal redfish and a few trout but nothing spectacular so I showed them some very productive areas they may want to try later in the week. Took a cruise back to the west. Instead of chancing the big redfish in the surf that have been unusually uncooperative lately, I introduced the Cleeks to a solid mixture of very plentiful and extremely cooperative redfish in the 8-20# range on some 3-6′ deep clear flats. Pulled up, lower the trolling motor and absolutely smashed them! All fish were easily caught sight fishing and it was thrilling seeing the group have such fun. With the Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads in camo we took as many fish as we could humanly handle. Lots of trips coming up so book now to experience the wonder of Redfish University. Photos to...

Windy, rainy and lots of fish at Redfish University-March 4-5, 2010

High winds nor rains can stop Redfish University anglers! Guided Lawrences again on Friday then Jeff and his son, Cody, and Saturday. Conditions weren’t exactly ideal with 30-35 mph winds and some rain but there’s nothing wrong with a little challenge. Both days were filled with lots of redfish and speckled trout including a nice 5.5 fat trout. Most of the redfish were in the 19-24″ range and were cooperating nicely before the front blew through. We switched to larger 1/4oz. Marsh Works jigheads because of the high winds but the Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads remained the bait of choice. Forgot the camera for Saturday so I’ll add more client photos later. Lots of trips coming up so hopely the fishing will continue to be outstanding at Redfish U. I think it will! E...

Big Redfish after poor bottom fishing at Redfish University-November 18, 2010

My last trip before heading to Ambergris Caye, Belize for ten days. I am ready! Had a couple fellas who wanted to pull on some fish this morning for a few hours. Started at 700am and filled the  livewell with beautiful 4″ menhaden and 4-6″ mullet. For those interested in finding some quality live bait, the ponds on the south side of the bay along Ft. Pickens Rd. are packed with great numbers of both mullet and menhaden. Hit some bottom structure for about 45 minutes without a bite. Slow water? Incoming tide? I don’t know. Packed those rods up and pulled out the light tackle. Ran out of the Pass to the west side and found plenty of bait and birds. No visible signs of large redfish but we found soon enough that they were on the down-current side of the bait and near the bottom. A few other boats were up-current and didn’t see them with fish. Gulp! 5″ Jerkshads with 1/4oz. Marsh Works Bull Red jigheads and 3/4oz. Johnson Spoons worked great. I wouldn’t say there was a lot of redfish in the area and I don’t have a bottomfinder on the 21 Redfisher but they were definitely down-current waiting for the bait to come to them. Pulled on fish for a few hours and headed in at 1000am to pack for Belize. The bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, rum and cold Belikens are waiting for me. Look for some more RU reports after November 29. E Holstman Please click an image to enlarge and view...
