Tricky redfish and trout at Redfish University-June 6, 2010

The calls/emails keep coming, so Redfish University will continue to guide on the Gulf Coast. Our inshore waterways remain clear of oil. Guided Mr. Preston Thomas this morning. Preston is an experienced angler and wanted to go checkout some redfish and trout action in Pensacola Bay. Started out at 515am with some topwater action. Found the fish to be pretty sluggish today(maybe as a result of all the rain yesterday), but we did catch a handful of speckled trout until the bite came to a halt. Travelled to some other productive areas and found the redfish/trout more cooperative on the Berkley Gulp! Jerkshads. Most of the redfish were on the small side but we did find one larger 4.5# trout. Continued a little milkrun and found a few fish in each area. Today was pretty difficult but I think we did as well as we possibly could. Slow bite, lots of freshwater. Preston returned home with some redfish and trout to prepare on that new professional oven of his. Please click an image to enlarge and view...

Quick trip this morning at Redfish University-June 5, 2010

Got out this morning for a quick topwater redfish and trout trip. Hit some great areas and picked up several nice 2.5-3# trout and some quality redfish including a 26″ fish. Found most the redfish and trout on sandy bottom around bait. Lots of action and lots of fun. Pretty decent string on trips scheduled in the next few days. Hope the weather cooperates and the oil stays away. All fish released this morning. Please click an image to enlarge and view...

Yamaha VMax 250 SHO performance update-June 2, 2010

Hello everyone. The new Yamaha Vmax 250 SHO was mounted on my 2009 Hewes 21 Redfisher about a month ago. The engine currently has 21 hours on it and I wanted to provide a short report of my experience and the performance of the Yamaha 250 SHO. This engine has surpassed all expectations! 71 mph, incredible out of the hole, outstanding mid-range power and acceleration, quiet, reliable and 80# lighter than the F225! The SHO is the perfect engine. Although I will rarely hit 71mph, it is nice to know that I can out-run storms, reel-in most boats in tournament settings and provide my clients with better range and more fishing time. Not to mention, the SHO cruises at 48-55mph under very little strain and sips fuel at 3.2-4.0 mpg. The Yamaha SHO is beautifully matched with the Yamaha Vmax Series 25TI 15 1/8 prop. For everyone interested in testing the Yamaha SHO, please visit Peter and Pete, Jr. at The Ship’s Chandler in Destin, FL. If I am in the area, I will be very happy to give you a test ride on my boat. Thanks again and here are a few photos. Please click an image to enlarge and view...

Great trout, slow redfish and rain at Redfish University-May 31, 2010

Guided Mr. Jim Greeson and friend, Richard, this morning. With rain all around, we dodged rain showers and lightning most of the morning. Started at 515am with some topwater action for the normally pretty consistent speckled trout and redfish. Only had a few blowups in the first ten minutes so we switched to Gulp! Jerkshads pretty quickly. We immediately started catching small to medium-sized trout and no redfish. Ran to another area to find the same small trout bite with one 5# fish being the exception. Went to a recently very productive redfish bank and only picked up one decent fish but also scored a few large trout in the 4.5-5# range. Ended the day catching a few decent redfish on a marshy bank but really never hammered the redfish like in recent days. Plenty of speckled trout but the redfish were tough. All fish released. Very quick but awesome trip at Redfish University-May 28, 2010

Guided Mr. Trevor Thomas this morning for a quick trip before I left for Atlanta. Trevor was interested in the learning about the recent topwater action and where to target these redfish and trout. Started at first light again and started getting huge strikes and caught nice fish immediately. The redfish and trout pounded the surface baits until 830am and then we switched to Gulp! Jerkshads. Fished four or five very productive areas and was back at the ramp by 1000am to beat the heat. Ended with 15-20 trout including some 4-5# fish as well as 10+ redfish between 23-26″. A short but very fun day. Headed to ATL for the weekend and then another packed schedule at Redfish U. next Monday-Friday. See everyone soon. No photos today as I forgot my camera and my cell phone camera is...
